Medical student scholarships

Edwin L. Mueller, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the Alamo Chapter of TAFP and his family and friends, Dr. Mueller was a longtime TAFP member who took care of generations of patients during his 40 year career as a Family Physician in San Antonio. Eligibility: Texas medical students who are in their fourth year and are students at UTHSC San Antonio.
Glen Johnson, MD, Minority Medical Student Scholarship
The TAFP Foundation established this scholarship in part with a donation from the Wellcare Foundation to honor Dr. Johnson. Dr. Johnson is a TAFP past president and past AAFP leader. Eligibility requirement: Texas medical student who is in their fourth year and is an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority.
Arnold N. Krause, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the Tarrant County Chapter Scholarship in 1999, the scholarship was named after long-time leader and mentor, Arnold N. Krause, MD, after his death in 2005. The scholarship benefits third and fourth year medical or osteopathic students who are legal residents of Tarrant County, Texas. Eligibility requirement: Texas medical students who are in their fourth year with a connection to Tarrant County.
Patrick Leung, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established in 2015 from a generous donation from Dr. Leung and his wife Nancy, the scholarship is intended to encourage medical students to pursue a career in family medicine. Dr. Leung practiced for over 30 years in Midland, Texas. Eligibility requirement: Texas medical students who are in their fourth year of medical school.
Dr. David Pillow Scholarship in Honor of 2001 TAFP President Justin Bartos, MD
Established in 2015 with the proceeds of two life insurance policies that Dr. Pillow donated at the time of Dr. Bartos’ installation as TAFP President in 2001. Dr. Pillow was a TAFP Life member and practiced in North Richland Hills for many years, helped found what is now known as North Hills Hospital, and served as program director of the John Peter Smith Family Medicine Residency from 1972-78. Dr. Pillow passed away on May 24, 2014 at the age of 90. The scholarship benefits fourth year medical or osteopathic students who are current or former residents of Tarrant County, Texas. Eligibility requirement: Texas medical students who are in their fourth year with a connection to Tarrant County.
South Texas Chapter Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the South Texas Chapter benefiting medical students who have an interest in family medicine. Known for its successful annual seminar in Port Aransas, the South Texas Chapter established the scholarship with proceeds from this CME event. Eligibility requirement: Texas medical students who are in their fourth year with an interest in practicing family medicine in a rural area. Preference will be given to students with a connection to Calhoun, Jackson, Victoria, Lavaca, Goliad, Gonzales, or DeWitt county (the area of the South Texas Chapter).
Valley Chapter Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the Valley Chapter of TAFP to benefit medical students in the Lower Rio Grande Valley area. The scholarship was funded by proceeds from the Valley Chapters successful annual family practice seminar. Eligibility: Texas medical students who are in their third or fourth year with a connection to the lower Rio Grande Valley.

Weldon G. Kolb, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the TAFP Foundation in honor of Dr. Kolb. Dr. Kolb was a charter member and past TAFP President from La Marque, Texas. Contact the Department of Family Medicine at UTMB for more information. Eligibility requirement: Third-year medical student at UTMB Galveston.
Minnie Lee Lancaster, MD, and Edgar Lancaster, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the TAFP Foundation with donations from their colleagues and friends. They opened the first clinic in Grapevine, TX and help build the Grapevine Memorial Hospital and Clinic. Medical students interested in this scholarship should contact Carolyn Lindeman at the UT Southwestern Department of Family Medicine. Eligibility requirement: Medical student at UT Southwestern.
Norma Porres, MD, and Felipe Porres, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the South Plains Chapter of TAFP in honor of both Drs. Porres. Exiled from Cuba, these family physicians settled in Lubbock and were very active in continuing medical education. Dr. Norma Porres was a past South Plains Chapter president. Medical students interested in this scholarship should contact Len Hovey in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Texas Tech University School of Medicine. Eligibility requirement: Third-year medical student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
S. Perry Post, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the Alamo Chapter of TAFP in honor of Dr. Post. Dr. Post was the last TAFP charter member and was a past Family Physician of the Year. Eligibility: Third-year medical students at UTHSC – San Antonio.
Harold T. Pruessner, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the Harris County Chapter of TAFP in honor of Dr. Pruessner. Dr. Pruessner was Chair of the Department of Family Practice and helped create the residency program at UT Houston. Contact the Harris County Chapter of TAFP for more information. Eligibility requirement: Third-year medical student at UT Houston or Baylor College of Medicine.
William F. Ross, MD, Medical Student Scholarship
Established by the Dallas Chapter of TAFP in honor of Dr. Ross. Dr. Ross practiced many years in the San Benito, Texas before becoming the first Family Practice Chair of UTSW in Dallas. Medical students interested in this scholarship should contact Carolyn Lindeman at the UT Southwestern Department of Family Medicine. Eligibility: Medical student at UT Southwestern.
