TAFP Foundation offers scholarships
to medical students, residents

The TAFP Foundation has thousands of dollars available in scholarships for medical students and residents. We have assembled information on those scholarships and some other exciting opportunities. Students: TAFP Foundation scholarship opportunities
Apply by May 10

The TAFP Foundation has five scholarships currently seeking applicants, all due by May 10. Each scholarship has specific criteria, so please read through all of the descriptions below to see if you qualify. Most awards are in the $1,000 range but can vary based on the available funds and at the discretion of the scholarship committee. Glen Johnson, M.D. Minority Medical Student Scholarship

Available to third- or fourth-year medical students who are from an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority and have a strong interest in family medicine.

Jim and Karen White Leadership Scholarship

Available to a medical student or resident with a strong interest in family medicine who has demonstrated leadership abilities. The scholarship is for travel funds to attend a conference.

Arnold N. Krause, M.D. Medical Student Scholarship

Available to third- or fourth-year medical students from or currently living in Tarrant County who have a strong interest in family medicine.

Valley Chapter Scholarship

Available to third- or fourth-year medical students from the Rio Grande Valley area of the state who intend to practice in the Valley and have a strong interest in family medicine.

South Texas Scholarship

Available to third- or fourth-year medical students who have a strong interest in practicing family medicine in a rural area. Preference will be given to students from or who intend to practice in the counties of Dewitt, Lavaca, Goliad, Victoria, Jackson, or Calhoun.

Students: TMLT scholarships available
Apply by June 15

The Texas Medical Liability Trust has four $10,000 scholarships available for medical students entering their third or fourth year in the fall of 2010. To apply, students must submit a short essay. For more information on eligibility and application requirements, go to the TMLT website.

Students and residents: AAFP National Conference scholarships
Apply by May 1

The AAFP Foundation has a number of scholarships available to provide travel funding to attend National Conference in Kansas City July 29-31, 2010. The scholarship applications must be postmarked by May 1, 2010, so act now. Visit www.aafp.org/nc/scholarships to get information and applications for the various scholarships.

Students and residents: Jim and Karen White Leadership Scholarship
Apply by May 10

All residents and students are invited to apply for the Jim and Karen White Leadership Scholarship. The funds can be used to attend any leadership-related conference including National Conference in Kansas City, July 29-31.

Residents: James C. Martin, M.D. Scholarship
Apply by March 30

For the first time, the TAFP Foundation is offering the James C. Martin, MD Scholarship for residents. It’s not a traditional scholarship; it’s an opportunity for a unique experience in policymaking and advocacy. The resident who is selected will take part in a four-week program—a week of preparation, two weeks in Austin, and a week preparing a report to publish in Texas Family Physician magazine. The focus will be on medical education and, specifically, what policy changes could be proposed to increase the number of graduates entering family medicine programs.

All residents are eligible to apply. You must have a letter of support from your residency director. The recipient will receive $1,000 plus up to $2,000 in travel funding.

The deadline for the application and supporting materials is March 30, 2010.

Second-year residents: AAFP/Bristol-Myers Squibb Award For Excellence in Graduate Medical Education
Apply by April 1

AAFP selects 12 second-year residents from across the country to honor with the Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education. The honor comes with $1,000 and a trip to the AAFP Annual Scientific Assembly. Selection criteria include demonstrated leadership ability, community involvement, and exemplary patient care.
