Reconnecting to your "why"
By Dr. Karla Evans and Dr. Veronica Tetterton, co-founders of Anticipate Joy
Has your love for your career waned a bit? Are you struggling to connect to your “why”? Indeed, you have been through a lot in the past year. With COVID and the overwhelming demands on you physically, emotionally, and psychologically, it’s not uncommon to lose touch with your purpose and the joy for your career.
We want you to know that you are not alone. You are among others who feel the same. Since we began our partnership with TAFP, one of the common reasons family physicians have sought treatment is due to work overload, stress, and a need to reconnect to the joy of their job and family.
Establishing and revisiting your “why” will give you hope and more optimism about your future, and it will help you realign your professional ambitions and aspirations.
So how do you reconnect with your “why”? We have two simple steps.
Focus on your impact. Too often we lose sight of the impact and positive change we bring to others. That is because we seem to be wired to meditate on the things we wish we could change. To reconnect to your “why,” make it a priority to spend time daily reflecting on the positive impact you brought to someone's life. No matter how small or insignificant it feels to you, your presence, patience, and knowledge positively impacts people in your workplace. Take intentional time to notice your impact each day.
Invest in positive relationships. Whom we work with is as meaningful as what we do. Psychologist Martin Seligman has written extensively on the importance of relationships to happiness and fulfillment – it’s a core element of his “PERMA” model for flourishing. While relationships look different within the workplace than outside of it, they still matter. We would all be served by identifying more ways to develop positive working relationships. Identify a newer or younger employee you would like to empower and offer to help them navigate their career. Take the lead in scheduling an event that will allow you and your colleagues to know one another more fully.
