Once a year, family medicine residents and medical students come together to engage in real talk about family medicine with family medicine leaders, educators, and recruiters at the 2012 National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students, July 26-28, in Kansas City, Mo.

This year’s conference will focus on social justice, with topics associated with health, human rights, and community advocacy. Attendees will hear nationally recognized speakers who incorporate social justice into their practices.

National Conference also offers:

  • An Expo Hall with 400 exhibitors including residency programs, physician employers, medical missions, fellowships, government agencies, and more.
  • Workshops on topics such as sports medicine emergencies, social determinants of health and health equity, finding a job and transitioning into practice, and more.
  • The ability to influence AAFP policy and develop leadership skills in the student and resident congresses.
  • Clinical skills sessions and hands-on procedural skills courses. ($90 course fee required for procedural skills courses. Pre-registration recommended.)
  • A video contest by and for residents and students to promote the specialty of family medicine, with prizes awarded for the best 30-second commercial or short two-minute video.

More than 150 scholarships are available through AAFP to attend National Conference, available to AAFP resident or student members only. They include awards for community outreach, FMIG leadership, first-time student attendees, minority scholarships, and future leaders. Applications with the required essay or supporting documents must be received by May 1, 2012. For more information on scholarships, go to www.aafp.org/nc/scholarships.
