Mark your calendars for the Texas Medical Association’s TexMed 2012, May 18-19 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel in Dallas, Texas. During the conference, TMA will convene the House of Delegates and elect officers, trustees, delegates, and other representatives. TAFP has endorsed family physician Lewis Foxhall, M.D., of Houston, in his bid for re-election to the TMA Board of Trustees.
Foxhall is professor of clinical cancer prevention and vice president for health policy at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He has been a leader in organized medicine on all levels throughout his career, including serving as TAFP president in 1991 and as director of the Texas Family Medicine Statewide Preceptorship Program. He also is a past president of the Harris County Medical Society and the Houston Academy of Medicine.
Within TMA, he has served on the Council on Legislation, as chair of the Council on Socioeconomics, and as a member of the Council on Health Service Organizations and the Select Committee on Patient Safety. He chaired the Ad Hoc Committee on Insurance and Managed Care and was a member of the ad hoc Committee on Health System Reform. He also served as a consultant on the Select Committee on Medicaid/Uninsured and the ad hoc Committee on Health Information Technology.
“Dr. Foxhall is a proven leader in the house of medicine, a team player who diplomatically works with TMA and TAFP to craft health care policy to benefit the profession. He has been a unifying force in his past term on the TMA board, using his experiences as a family physician, professor, and senior leader at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to understand the diverse membership of the TMA and develop recommendations to keep the organization at the top of the field,” TAFP President I. L. Balkcom IV, M.D., wrote in a nomination letter.
Additionally, Gary Floyd, M.D., a practicing pediatrician for more than 30 years, is running for vice speaker. He is executive vice president of medical affairs at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Floyd previously served as chair of the Texas Primary Care Coalition, as president of the Texas Pediatric Society, and as president of the Tarrant County Medical Society. Within TMA, he currently serves as chair of TEXPAC and as chair of the Council on Legislation, and previously served as chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Retail Health Clinics, among other positions.
The House of Delegates Opening Session will be held Friday, May 18, at 8 a.m. Nominating speeches will be made at opening session, followed by reference committee meetings and the candidate forum. County caucus meetings will take place Saturday, May 19, from 6:30 - 8 a.m. with elections at 9:15.
