Madeline Hazle graduates from the University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio this month and will begin a family medicine residency there later this year after matching to the program this spring. Currently finishing up her duties as TAFP’s Student Chair, Hazle is excited to continue her involvement with the Academy as a resident member.

Who or what inspired you to choose family medicine?
I was inspired by the family physicians I interacted with early in medical school. I saw them as friendly and caring people who were also educators and leaders in the community, and I decided I wanted to be like them! I also love family medicine because of the variety, continuity of care, and strong community engagement.

What is next for you in your medical training and career?
I will be staying in Texas and starting my family medicine residency at UT Health San Antonio this summer.

Why do you choose to be a TAFP member?
I was introduced to TAFP through the summer Preceptorship Program. I loved the program so much that I decided I wanted to be more involved with the organization. I have really enjoyed connecting with other people who share my passion for family medicine and learning more about the specialty through TAFP.

What has surprised you most about family medicine?
Something that surprised me was the number of procedures that family medicine physicians can perform, from simple skin shave biopsies to vasectomies, colonoscopies, and so much more. The opportunities that the flexibility of family medicine training provides is truly amazing!

What advice would you give other medical students about the Match?
My advice is to always be yourself and to stay true to your priorities. I believe that if you do that, you will end up in the place you’re meant to be. The Match process can be stressful, but it’s also super exciting so try to enjoy it as much as you can.
