New events at this year’s C. Frank Webber Lectureship and Interim Session

If you haven’t yet registered for the upcoming TAFP C. Frank Webber Lectureship and Interim Session happening April 8 – 9 in Austin, there’s no time like the present! In addition to the incredible 16.25 CME credits offered Friday and Saturday and our standard council meetings happening Friday morning, we have a series of exciting firsts for TAFP on Saturday.

Our first Member Assembly at Interim Session will take place at breakfast and include a great discussion on trends in health care from author Peter Valenzuela, MD, MBA. Attendees will receive a copy of his new, insightful book Doc-Related.

Our first council forums will also take place Saturday morning, following the Member Assembly breakfast. The intent of these new meetings in our recent governance change is to engage more members in discussion and work of the Academy. You can view the forum agendas here, but here are a few highlights:

Sherri Onyiego, MD, with Equality Health will speak during the Council on Health of the Public Forum. Equality Health is a population health company that partners with health plans to transition independent health care providers into value-based payment models.
Hear from a high school student and her advisor about HOSA, an organization dedicated to encouraging young people to pursue careers in health professions, during the Council on Workforce and Member Engagement Forum. You’ll learn how TAFP and AAFP are working with them and how you can volunteer.
AAFP Innovation Lab and Suki AI will offer a presentation on the future of tech in the exam room at the Council on Medical Practice Forum.

All members are welcome to register for and attend the Member Assembly and the council forums. If you only want to attend these Saturday activities, you can register for “business and other tracks” for $50. The fee includes the book, breakfast, and lunch – a bargain! Click here to register.

And don’t forget about the TAFP Exchange. If you aren’t signed up there yet, it’s a great place to network and engage in discussion with other TAFP members from across the state. President Biden announced that the public health emergency will end May 11. This will trigger the end of many emergency waivers and flexibilities that physicians, patients, and other stakeholders have become accustomed to. Legislative committees take up TAFP priorities

Two key legislative committees heard testimony this week about items in the state budget that directly affect access to care. The Senate Finance Committee took up Article II of the budget, which contains funding for all the state’s health care programs. The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Article III heard testimony from the state’s health-related institutions, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and parties interested in medical education.
TAFP member Jackson Griggs, MD, CEO of Waco Family Medicine, testified before both committees. First he spoke to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Article III, calling for the restoration of funding to the Family Practice Residency Program, a budget strategy administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board that funds family medicine residencies. Although the number of family medicine residents continues to increase year over year, the amount of THECB funding for those residents has withered, dropping from $14,300 per resident in 2011 to less than $4,800 in 2022. Restoring that funding is one of TAFP’s top priorities in the 88^th Texas Legislature. (Read TAFP’s issue brief on family medicine residency funding.)

TAFP members tell Senate Finance Committee to restore funding for family medicine residencies

The Senate Finance Committee met Tuesday, February 7, to hear testimony on Article III of the state budget, which contains all funding for graduate medical education. Two TAFP members traveled to Austin to provide testimony on what happened to be the Texas Medical Association’s primary-care-focused First Tuesday, when physicians from across the state wear their white coats to advocate for health care policy at the Capitol.
TAFP President Emily Briggs, MD, MPH, of New Braunfels called on the Legislature to restore funding to the Family Practice Residency Program, a budget strategy administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board that funds family medicine residencies. Although the number of family medicine residents continues to increase year over year, the amount of THECB funding for those residents has withered, dropping from $14,300 per resident in 2011 to less than $4,800 in 2022.
