HIPAA compliance date approaches AMA releases toolkit to assist physicians in compliance The American Medical Association recently released a toolkit to assist physicians with an upcoming HIPAA deadline. Covered entities that have signed new business agreements since the HIPAA Omnibus Final Rule was published have until Sept. 23 to comply with the new regulations. AMA’s toolkit includes instructions for compliance, frequently asked questions, and templates for privacy notices and agreements. ACA update: Small businesses must inform employees of health coverage options by Oct. 1 Do you have fewer than 25 employees in your practice? If so, you must provide your workers notice of new health coverage options available under the Affordable Care Act by the end of the month or face possible fines of $100 per worker per day. Improving the health of your elderly patients The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that many seniors are still not vaccinated for influenza and pneumonia, conditions that can be fatal for the elderly. Steps for appealing EHR audit The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act requires states to audit payments to providers and hospitals participating in the Texas Medicaid Electronic Health Record Incentive Program. Stage 2 Meaningful Use available soon Stage 2 of Meaningful Use will be available for eligible hospitals beginning Oct. 1, 2013 and for eligible professionals Jan. 1, 2014.
