Resident member drawn to medicine through international volunteer work
Meet September’s Member of the Month, Elizabeth Tran, M.D., chief resident for the Baylor Family Residency Program in Houston. Tran joined the U.S. Peace Corps after graduating from college to learn about other cultures, and at the same time gained a deep appreciation for her own life: her family and friends, health, and education. She realized she wanted to help people improve their lives through their health, which led her to pursue family- and community-based medicine with a focus on women’s health.

It’s time to fight for the Statewide Primary Care Preceptorship Program
Last session, the Legislature zeroed out state support for the TSPCPP, leaving the program in jeopardy. TAFP came to its aid, taking over the program’s administration and website. In preparation for the next Legislature, we want to celebrate the success and importance of this program, which introduces medical students to the joy and satisfaction of family medicine. New loan repayment program to draw physicians to central Texas
The St. David’s Foundation and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board have announced a new loan repayment program that will draw physicians, dentists, and other health professionals to eligible sites within a five-county central Texas area. Apply by Oct. 1, 2012, to receive up to $30,000 annually for four years of service.

HRSA meeting on rural health services to be held in Austin, Sept. 26-28
The National Advisory Committee on Rural Health Services will meet Sept. 26-28 at the Radisson Hotel and Suites Austin Downtown, in Austin. On the first day of the meeting, the committee will examine the future of the rural health care infrastructure and the rural effects of recent changes to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program. Thursday the committee will visit rural health sites in Llano and Gonzales, Texas, and Friday, the committee will summarize findings and adjourn at 11:15 a.m. The meeting is open to the public and public comment will be accepted on Wednesday and Thursday.
