AAFP News Now: HHS launches new initiative to strengthen primary care
CMS and its Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, or CMMI, have launched a blended payment initiative that will support primary care practices that deliver coordinated and seamless care based on the tenets of the patient-centered medical home. Participating practices will receive fee-for-service payments plus a per-patient, per-month care coordination fee ranging from $8 to $40. Read more in the Sept. 28 AAFP News Now story.

American Medical News: Hardship waivers offer last chance to avoid Medicare e-prescribing penalty
Physicians who do not e-prescribe in 2012 face a penalty of 1 percent of Medicare payments. However, physicians have until Nov. 1, 2011, to report a hardship exemption, giving the Medicare agency their reason why they should not have their pay reduced in 2012. HHSC seeks family physicians for three health care oversight groups
Family physicians interested in neonatal intensive care unit use, the development of coordinated health care delivery models, or overused services in Medicaid may consider applying for one of three groups created during the 82nd Legislature. Applications are due by Oct. 12, 2011.

Use AAFP resources at your medical school event
During National Primary Care Week, Oct. 10-14, medical schools are encouraged to organize events that focus on primary care, and FMIGs are encouraged to collaborate with chapters of the American Medical Student Association and other campus groups to represent and share family medicine. This year’s theme is “Innovations in Primary Care” and AAFP has several resources to help organize events at your medical school.
